Highly treacherous members of the New People’s Army bared their fangs yet again when they attempted to harass site surveyors of the Smartmatic Corp.-Total Information Management (Smartmatic-TIM) who were undertaking preparations - surveying for GSM transmission signals - in Quezon, Masbate and several Bicol provinces for the past few weeks.
These armed groups who have been preventing the site surveyors from reaching their target areas without first paying their monetary demands have now caused unnecessary delays to the success of the poll automation. In a nutshell, these bandits have proven yet again that they exist for money and money alone. They no longer operate because of ideology and has no desire to see our country, let alone their kababayans, experience the technical advancement of their electoral rights.
By wagging their M16 rifles under the nose of these terrified site surveyors, these lowly extortionists only showcased their duplicity and their knack for issuing coercive threats against unarmed civilians who are only doing their job to earn a living for their family. In addition to this, their aggressive stand against the poll automation attest to the fact that they are not the people’s protector but are in fact the very source of their misery. By allowing these disgraceful bandits to exist in any area within our country will only endanger our democracy and rob us of our rights.
They have now started to take away from us our chance to improve our electoral system, so any other effort toward development will surely be impeded by these extortionists. Aside from using the polls to make money and forcing their guns on our throats, these criminals will be our bane, that is, unless we do something about their existence.
